Exotic-Animal Veterinary Navigation

How to find a vet qualified for marsupials before an emergency — plus triage signals and visit preparation.

Specialist directories

Search the AEMV (exotic mammals) and AAV directories for clinics experienced with marsupials, then call and confirm actual sugar-glider caseload.

24-hour emergency backup

Identify the nearest 24 h exotic-capable emergency hospital before you need it. Save address and phone; verify night exotic coverage and travel time in advance.

Prepare before the visit

Bring the weight log (CSV export), diet recipe, recent photos, a fresh stool sample under 4 h old, and the glider in its familiar sleeping pouch.

🚨 Emergency red flags — do not wait
  1. No food intake or droppings for 12–24 hours — small marsupials crash fast; dehydration and GI stasis are emergencies.
  2. Hind-leg weakness, tremors or seizures — classic warning of calcium deficiency / MBD, which can become permanent quickly.
  3. Limp, cold, unresponsive body or fainting — shock, hypothermia, severe illness.
  4. Labored breathing, clicking sounds, wet nose or blue gums — respiratory emergency.
  5. Bleeding, open wounds, swelling or a pulled tail — tail degloving needs urgent surgical assessment.
  6. Self-mutilation: overgroomed bald patches, bites or persistent scratching at one spot — pain/stress emergency.
  7. Diarrhea over 6 hours, blood in stool, or repeated vomiting.
  8. Eye/nose discharge, crusty closed eye, or sudden bulging.
